Valdez Snowmachine Club has coordinated dates for its most popular, largest hoedowns of the season. Coming quick is the 200-mile Cross-country Mayor’s Cup followed by the spring fling Mountain Man Hillclimb.
The Mayor’s Cup race start is set for 11 a.m., Saturday, March 15, and racers leave the line from the Pipeyard in Valdez. They’ll make nine passes around the 22-mile course for nearly 200 miles and multiple opportunities for spectators to see the racers pass through various checkpoints. This race includes Pro, Semi-Pro, Veteran and Women’s classes with an additional Junior Trophy Class for ages 14-17 that will only complete 2 passes of the course for a total of 44 miles.

The 24th Annual Valdez Mountain Man Hillclimb, a precursor to the Jackson Hole Hill Climb National Championship, will take place in Thompson Pass, north of Valdez, on Friday-Sunday, April 18-20.
The Hillclimb involves weekend camping in a family atmosphere with food, fun and of course the hill challenge. Snowmachiners attempt to ascend the nearby slope successfully—which many do are not successful—and in the quickest time. Fans can almost image the machines being launched into the atmosphere as they scream up the mountain, and, for the failed attempts, watching the occasional sled tumble back to Earth is exciting, too.
