Summer event celebrates vintage snowmachines

By Melissa DeVaughn

Christmas in July came to snowmachine enthusiasts who appreciate a good, well-aged machine as Alaska Vintage Sleds hosted the Alaska Vintage Sled Show-n-Shine event at the Alaska Transportation Museum in Wasilla. The inaugural summer event, held July 29, attracted some 1,000 visitors and hosted more than 80 sleds.

Fifty-eight of the sleds were entered into competition with the top awards going to Fairbanks resident Alan Onderik, who took home Best of Show for his 1968 Scorpion Stinger and People’s Choice award for his 1964 Husky 444.

“Somehwere around noon, the count was 84 sleds, not including the other miscellaneous snow vehicles, and sleds and people kept coming throughout the day,” said Richard Knox, who along with lifelong childhood friend Victor Knott organized the entire event. “The competition was tough for the show entrants with all of the beautiful sleds.”

Knox said due to the success of the summer event, Alaska Vintage Sleds is planning another show and rally for late February/early March. The dates have not yet been confirmed yet, but it will likely be just before the Fairbanks Tired Iron event, which is slated for March 17, 2018.

“Many thanks to those who helped throughout the day, and especially at the end of the day with the load outs,” Knox said. “The judges did a fine, unbiased job and provided some great feedback for future shows. With their candid feedback and expert technical advice, the shows will get better and better.”
