The 55th annual Willow Winter Carnival is just around the corner, so get your snowmachine mojo going. This season’s event happens Jan. 29-31 and Feb. 5-7. This year’s carnival celebrates with the theme, “Year of the Sandhill Crane,” with a live Sandhill Crane show at the Willow Library 1-2 p.m. Feb. 6.
Other events include the kick-off dinner on Jan. 29, which will feature a silent auction, and the Gold Pan Awards.
There also will be a fireworks display at 8 p.m. sponsored by Gorilla Fireworks and Matanuska Valley Federal Credit Union.
The first weekend of the carnival will include a bloodmobile, geocaching, a 5K run, an outhouse race, snowshoe softball, a 5K ski race and a kids’ sled dog race. The second weekend includes the annual vintage snowmachine race hosted by the Mat-Su Vintage Snowmachine Racers Club, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 6, and a poker run noon-3 p.m. The last Sunday of the carnival is a contest of the “Worst Carhartts and Best Beard” competition, a dessert auction, and a tug-of-war.
