Haines resident Chris Brooks won the 48th annual Alcan 200 snowmachine road rally this year for the second straight winter.
Conditions were very bad along the race trail, which takes riders along the closed Haines Highway from the Alaska border north of Haines to a turnaround point at Dezadeash Lodge in the Yukon. According to the Chilkat Snowburners, the area experienced a cold snap on race day, Jan. 21, with temperatures reportedly 30 below zero at the turnaround spot. Of the 27 riders who entered the race, 10 didn’t finish the course.
Jack Smith, Jr. of Haines finished second to Brooks for the second straight year, and Whitehorse’s Nathan Peterson was third.
