Aklestad, Johnson claim Iron Dog victory

The 2016 Iron Dog champions arrived in Fairbanks around noon on Saturday, with a pair of riders who have been chasing a victory for more than a decade. Team 8 riding Ski-Doos, Tyler Aklestad and Tyson Johnson, arrived along Chena River to a crowd of fans. The finished about 34 minutes ahead of runners-up Todd Minnick and Nick Olstad.

Aklestad, 30, is from Palmer and has raced Iron Dog 12 times. He works for MTA as an IBEW journeyman. Johnson, 36, is from Eagle River and works for H&K Sheetmetal Fabricators. He  has been racing Iron Dog since he was 17. The pair will take home the $65,000 prize. An awards ceremony was held Saturday evening in Fairbanks.
